coffins...........

Heres a really early preview of something I'm working on....Ive been teaching myself how to cut glass and make things from it. Instead of soldering I wanted to glue and stitch the pieces together. Here are my first 'glass coffins' which I hope I will be available through one of my stockists soon.
I'm always seeing waste glass in skips and from old windows etc so I just wanted to be able to use it and include it in my work in some way.
I'm still learning lots from it but i really I love it.
The stitching and gluing needs refining but I wanted then glass segments to be joined with fabric in some way and I like how they interact with the birds textures and muted tones.

  2. Wow! I've just been to Edinburgh so my mind is on all things gothic and gravelike. These are truly awe inspiring. I love the way you reuse things. Minerva x

  3. Gorgeous.
    Wonderful idea.
    Have you thought of possibly using a glass drill bit to join them? {holes like laces would go through...}

  4. It seems strange to say "Lovely" of such subject matter, but truly they are. Peaceful as well, like they had a very long and happy life. The coffins are perfect.

  8. Dear Mister Finch
    Your creativity is amazing with such scrumptious irony! These birds in their 'coffins' are to 'die for'....

  10. I saw this picture on someone else's blog page, and thought someone's beloved finch died! I used to keep lots of finches. When each died, I used a pretty cardboard box as a coffin, and did a funeral. I am so glad that they are not real ones! Still your works are evocative.

  11. Fabulous! I love the way your mind works. I have some boxes, ex museum, that have glass lids and the glass is joined to the cardboard edges with glued paper. Very strong and has survived maybe 50+ years so far. Cloth of course will be even stronger.

  12. Oh, dearest Finch, the subject caught my attention, but the execution (of the glass boxes!!!) held it. Had mused off and on about how to use up lots of old glass, and wasn't excited about the whole soldering thing. Will borrow and tweak this concept! Thank you for your world of inspiration!
